For those of you that have retired and nearing the age (62) where you can elect to receive social security early, consider the following...Your spouse, assuming that she's also entitled to benefits from her past work experience, is entitled to either her projected benefit or half of yours, whichever is greater. Also, this greater amount does not affect what you receive. While this isn't exactly a secret, I've heard that many SS agents, while discussing your benefits, will forget to mention this. You need to do the math to see how much more both you and your spouse will receive if you wait until the normal 65+ before collecting; more often than not you're better off not taking it at age 62. (Check with your SSA rep for confirmation of this)
