Many TWA'ers are concerned about the well being of all those who have been in the path of hurricane Irene. We'd appreciate your checking in to let us know that all is well.

Canton, MA ...lots of limbs down no power outages unless isolated. Plenty of wind and rain. Power outages in Hingham, MA....trees and limbs down, lots of wind and rain.

Meanwhile, in the high 90's and NO RAIN in Southern, MS.

All is well from my perch in Manhattan. We probably dodged a bullet, though, with Irene losing steam once she approached the NYC area this morning. Given the levels of rain and wind that we had last night ...... I think today would have been very trying had Irene maintained hurricane-level strength.

Some wind and clouds here in Columbia, SC, and no rain (unfortunately). Wouldn't have known that a hurricane went by if the news media hadn't told us.

PITbeast is believed to live in one of the areas probably to have received the greatest force/damage from Irene.....He doesn't post too often recently.

An e-mail has been sent to his last known address. Hopefully he will respond with: "All present and accounted for."

T.S. Irene was little more than a "normal" nor'easter in coastal New Hampshire. A couple of inches of rain, no power outage, no damage and no trees down. I'm grateful. [Smile]

Life in Florida boarding on the boring...no hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes or floods...but no thoughts of moving either.

Irene came almost over us but at the last minute moved inland somewhat and the winds diminished. We got 8+ inches of rain and lost two large trees (winds got up to 80 a few times) but the house did not get touched. We lost all TV, Internet and phone till late yesterday but since we have a standby generator, we lived quite well, even without TV. amazing, eh what?

We bought one of those about 8 years ago. We originally thought we would get a small one to just supply basic power, but then we decided that if we were going to get one we may as well get one that would supply all the power we would need so that in those circumstances we could live normally. Cost us about 10K for a 25KW powered by natural gas, but we've never regretted having all the lights, heat, a/c, and everything else we needed during power outages. Ours automatically starts up when it senses a power loss and shuts itself down when power is restored.

I would highly reccommend one to anyone who wants to live comfortably in his own home during outages.

With all respect, Cap'n Eddie, I rather looked forward to "surviving" Irene. I called the water utility to learn that they were prepping their diesel generators and that they could gravity feed if necessary. Takes care of water.

A generator wouldn't help with cable and telephone outages (assuming lines were down).

We had oil lamps, wicks, lamp oil and flashlights with new batteries ready to go.

For winter emergencies we have a Jotul gas stove for heat.

We stocked up on canned food (and a manual can opener) which we could heat up on the gas cooktop.

Finally we had board games and books ready to go for entertainment.

An entertaining diversion from this otherwise boring life!!! [Big Grin]

All's well.

Friday I lit off the burn piles so that mess wouldn't get scattered all over the place. Also got the furniture off the porches, plants and bird feeders off their hangers, and the generator ready to go.

Saturday around 0730 the eye made landfall about 60 miles east of here. Don't know how much rain we got: the wind blew over the rain gauge. Lots of limbs down. One sickly cherry tree along the drive way was blown over; the persimmon in the orchard took a hit but can be, in part, salvaged. We never lost power and I spent the morning baking. By 1700 the rain stopped and the wind died down enough that I could go out and feed the dogs.

Sunday was beautiful and we spent the day cleaning up the yard and putting furniture back on the porches.

No damage to any of the buildings but we've got some big oaks down in the woods behind the house. I'll wait for cooler weather before I deal with them.

Sounds as if we all came out of this in pretty good shape.

Lots of downed trees here in leafy Westchester County (what else is new) - we were without power for 63 hours. A couple of puddles of water in the basement (didn't even think that was possible given the topography). In the end all's well - it was essentially a stay at home camping trip [Smile]

We live on the bayfront of the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, just south of Annapolis. We always assume it's going to be another Isabelle and prepare accordingly, but Irene's eye stayed to the east so the strong winds blew the water away from us. Lots of trees down and no power until last night. I love my 5KW generator: When you have a well, it's a muster. All's well here.

Well, I live in a neighborhood with canals to the Albemarle sound. As Irene passed just east of here the water came up. I had 2 feet in my garage. (My house is on pilings, no H2o in the house.) Just a lot of clean up. I'm writing this on Thursday morning, still cleaning. You know all that junk we all have in our garages? Most of which we should have thrown out years ago? That's what I'm doing now! [Roll Eyes]

Some like it comfy.

....rural power goes off for days around here during summer thunderstorms and winter blizzards. In fact our power was off for 35 hours over July 4th.

In the summer....build a campfire for roasting hot dogs.. Kerosene lamps for light ....sleep under the stars.

Winter blizzard? Wood burning fireplace, chili cooked in an iron crock over the open fire. A bit of cheese and crackers.

After dinner..... a Macanudo cigar, candle light, drinks to warm the soul and a good book. Soft bedding, piles of blankets before the flickering fire. Wife all snuggled up to keep "us" warm. Romance is sure to follow.....

My kind of "survival."

Bob

P.S. Glad you are all safe. I am far away in Utah doing backcountry flying in our Maule.
