 - HAMPTON, NH (CBS) – A Cessna 180 crashed after taking off from the Hampton Airfield in North Hampton, New Hampshire Monday morning. Two people on board were killed.

Authorities have identified the pilot as David Ingalls, 77, of Kingston, New Hampshire. The name of the other victim has not yet been released but he is believed to be in his 60s.

Witnesses say there didn’t seem to be any issue at first. “It looked like a really nice takeoff,” said witness Bob Lamothe. “All of a sudden the plane pitched up and went very severely into the sky and you could see it losing speed.”

Officials on the scene did not yet have a cause of the crash as of Monday afternoon. The FAA is investigating.

“It did bear to the left and came down in a clump of trees at the end of the runway,” said North Hampton Fire Chief Dennis Cote.

The crash happened as the airport was celebrating its annual employee and guest appreciation day with airplane contests and competitions.

The pilot and passenger were not here for the event according to Cote. They were at the airfield to refuel.

“It’s just an awful tragedy,” said pilot Dana Thurston. “The guy was a good pilot.”

From today's NTSB press conference: "

Investigators are looking into the maintenance and pilot records for a 1956 Cessna involved in a double-fatal crash Monday at the Hampton Airfield after receiving three different witness and surveillance videos of the takeoff and crash.

Todd Gunther, an air safety investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, said during a brief press conference at the crash site Wednesday that it's too “preliminary” to disclose information about the records, which he said they received Wednesday afternoon, or the videos.

Gunther said the videos raise a number of questions about the takeoff of the aircraft, which claimed the lives of pilot David Ingalls, 77, and Bruce Anderson, 62, both of Kingston, around 10:50 a.m. Monday. He said it would be speculation to state whether the takeoff looked normal based on the footage, though.

Preliminary investigative work has thus far determined there was no apparent sign of engine trouble and no sign the flight control systems failed, according to Gunther. He also said the crash wasn't caused by “seat slippage” because the craft's seats were “locked into position.”

Here's a video taken by a female witness, as David departed the airfield to the north.
