In an attempt to relive some of the more positive moments in TWA's history, I have reviewed Smilin' Jack's message board covering that period of time prior to and during the loss of our airline.

Thank you, Captn' Jack for retaining those messages. They contained expressions of hope so necessary for our employees to face their uncertain future. The words of encouragement from our passengers will forever be remembered and appreciated.

And, to those same passengers who may still frequent this board, although there has not been much good news in recent years, you will certainly enjoy knowing that the furloughed pilots are slowly returning to the cockpits of your airliners.

some will say that time heals all wounds...wrong. a pillar in aviation history was destroyed by just a few people who thought that a deal with a bankruptcy headliner would be a cure for what ails ya. [Mad]

Captain Randy -

I'm going to have to do a little archive reading myself. I miss those days from a couple years before the acquisition when there was hope in the air for a turnaround of TWA. I think some positive steps were being taken with focus cities, modernizing the fleet, operations, etc. Anyway ... thanks for the heads up.

Mioguido -

I certainly agree with you on how our beloved airline was handed over. As to time healing ........ on my part it has a bit. I am flying a lot on American and have been treated very well. At the same time, I do often daydream about the "what-ifs" ..... I'm not sure TWA could have survived the aftermath of 9/11, fuel prices, etc. but ...... a part of me still thinks that with the right management and vision, we would still be seeing TWA jets lighting up the sky.

Jeff-
it seems the WRONG management made the mess... so it might be safe to think the RIGHT management could of cleaned up the mess. we'll never know. i for one thought TWA had more than a fair chance of surviving when Compton took over. he was not what i call a desk bred type of manager, everyone else in the upper ranks were.

Well --- I know I stated it in the past either on this board or Yahoo (can't remember) but ..... in my opinion, Compton was a superb COO. If TWA could have firmly ensconced Compton as COO and gone out to find more of a business-oriented, visionary type of person as CEO ..... it just may have been a winning combination.
