Been kind of quiet around here lately except for the inevitable obituaries, so how about a little something different?

If you're not familiar with Beverly (Bevo) Howard, among other things he was the first person to do an outside loop in a light plane, was three-time National Lightplane Aerobatic Champion and one of the best known air show pilots in the country. (See more here). However, his main job was the owner and operator of Hawthorne Aviation, a company that trained military pilots. I completed the Primary phase of my USAF flight training at his school at Moultrie, GA in 1960. One of the features of our graduation ceremony was an air show Bevo performed for us in his Bücker Jungmeister (in which he was killed some 11 years later), an event I’ve never forgotten.

You may be interested in the textbook below, which has long been out of print, for its historical value, which Bevo's son has made available as a Kindle version through Amazon.com (See links below the picture):

 -

You can obtain the Kindle Edition of "You Can Learn to Fly" or view and download an extensive sample of its contents here.

The decade long process of saving this book also included doing battle with copyright issues as described on this page.

The above link contains additional information such as where and how to obtain Kindle Reader applications and notes about the book's conversion process

P.S.: If you'll send a real nice e-mail to Bevo, Jr. at the address at the top of this page, he may send you a PDF copy (5 MB) as an e-mail attachment, which I did and he did.

I had the chance to talk at some length with Bob Hoover at an airshow convention in LAS some years back. Bevo Howard was his inspiration!

His exact comments were...

He (Bevo) could drink all night & chase "women" (he used a different word) and still fly an airshow the next day and he was 50 years old. I hope I can still do that when I'm 50...

then he winked at me...

... I just turned 70 and I haven't even begun to slow down...

I Love Bob Hoover!
