William Edward Clegg Jr., formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully Thursday July 23, 2015 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor, Maine with his family by his side. He was 79.
William (Bill) was born on December 7, 1935 in Boston, MA to Grace Agnes (Robinson) and William Edward Clegg. Bill was the oldest of seven children and grew up in West Roxbury, MA.
From an early age, Bill realized he had a love of flying and began working for flying lessons while still in high school. He graduated from Boston College High School and attended Boston College before enlisting in the Navy. After joining the Navy he enrolled in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program, where he earned his wings as a Naval Aviation. After flying for the Navy for six years, he left the military for a commercial pilot career with Trans World Airlines. His thirty-four years with TWA also included a six year lease program with Nippon Cargo Airlines, ending with his eventual retirement in 1999.
Bill was married in 1969 to Kathy Jeanne Ruscoe and together they raised four children in Newtown and Sharon, CT. He later relocated to Windsock Village in West Ossipee, NH where he realized his lifelong dream of living in a small house in the woods, with an airplane and grass strip. There he became active in his community serving on the Windsock Village Community Board and the Fire Commissioners Safety Council.
Bill was an active recreational pilot as well, leasing and owning several small planes over the years. In 2011, he was awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award recognizing his 50 plus years of safe flight operations. His total flight time accumulated was a noteworthy 25,000 hours. In addition to flying, he loved being outdoors, visiting neighbors, helping others, traveling, reading, smoking his pipe lazily outside or in his den, and playing with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his former wife and dear friend Kathy J. Clegg, as well as his sons William Robert Clegg of New York City, and Sean Michael Clegg of Lime Rock, CT, and his daughters Kimberly Grace Nichols of Bangor, ME and Lisa Minn Boxshall of Palm Beach, FL. He is also survived by his brothers Phillip of Centerport, NY and Ed of Standish, ME, and his sisters Helen of North Attleboro, MA and Nancy of Dana Point, CA. He is predeceased by his brother Richard and his sister Mary. He was a proud grandfather of 5 beautiful grandchildren Matthew Arden and Benjamin William Nichols, Lillian Emma and Bailey Grace Boxshall and Ivy Lynn Clegg.
Rest in Peace, Captain Clegg
